Thank you to all who joined our weekly Tuesday webinar yesterday. For those of you who were unable to join, I am emailing now to provide you with an important update on NYC school closures. As discussed in our webinar, yesterday, Governor Cuomo unveiled a new plan to close schools in NYC hotspots. Schools in orange and red zones will close by Friday at the latest for a minimum of two weeks per Governor Cuomo’s mandate until infection rates decrease enough to put them in a yellow zone. Schools in yellow zones will be required to do weekly testing, the exact percent of students and staff will be determined and communicated by DOH in the coming days. This is a result of the fact that the top 20 zip codes have infection rates of 5.5%, compared to a 1.2% statewide average. The attached maps are the current determinant of which schools must move to fully remote instruction – not the prior list of zip codes. The NYC Department of Education is communicating that their schools in impacted areas will be closed tomorrow, as opposed to Friday. Schools in co-located space should confirm if they will have access to their building tomorrow.
We encourage schools to have a communication plan for your staff and families to alert them to closure, if only to dispel what could become problematic rumors about where schools are closed and where they are not.
