A meeting of the SUNY Board of Trustees’ Charter Schools Committee was held in the afternoon of Thursday, June 11, 2020. Attendees included Committee members and staff of the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, SUNY Board of Trustees, as well as some representatives of the schools undergoing votes by the Committee. 

The Committee addressed the following resolutions: 

Applications for Charter Renewals

The Committee discussed and unanimously approved the proposed three-year renewal for the following school:

The Committee discussed and unanimously approved the following resolution

  • The awarding of State Stimulus Fund Grants to the following schools:
    • Buffalo Collegiate Charter School
    • Elmwood Village Charter School Hertel
    • Evergreen Charter School
    • Merrick Academy – Queens Public Charter School
    • Niagara Charter School
    • Persistence Preparatory Academy Charter School
    • The Academy Charter School 
    • Truxton Academy Charter School

The following actions were approved as a part of the consent agenda: 

  • Charter Revisions: 
    • Ascend Charter Schools revisions:
      • East Flatbush Ascend Charter School requested an enrollment decrease to serve 79 students in grades K-1 for the 2019-20 school year growing to serve 297 students in grades K-5 by the 2023-24 school year, the final year of the current charter term.
      • Lefferts Gardens Ascend Charter School requested an enrollment decrease to serve 48 students in grades K-1 for the 2019-20 school year growing to serve 405 students in grades K-5 by the 2023-24 school year, the final year of the current charter term.
    • Capital Prep Charter Schools NY revisions:
      • Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School requested an enrollment decrease to serve 350 students in grades 6-10 for the 2019-20 school year and 400 students in grades 6-11 for the 2020-21 school year.
    • The International Charter School of New York requested an enrollment decrease to serve 431 students in grades K-5 for the 2019-20 school year. 
    • Zeta Charter Schools revision:
      • Zeta Charter School – New York City 3 and Zeta Charter School – opening in the 2020-21 school year – requested an enrollment decrease for both schools to serve 60 students in Kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year growing to serve 476 students in grades K- 5 for the 2024-25 school year.
  • Updates:
    • 2020 Request for Proposals for New Applications
      • Due to circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the

continued review of new applications is currently suspended.

      • The Institute anticipates presenting all proposals recommended for approval to the SUNY Trustees’ Charter Schools Committee in the Fall of 2020. 
      • The earliest opening date for any school approved under the 2020 RFP is fall 2021.
  • Evaluations:
    • During the 2019-20 school year, Institute staff made approximately 42 regular cycle visits to SUNY authorized charter schools. To read more about these evaluations and the anticipated 2020-21 school year evaluations, click the link below.  
  • Awards:
