The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) issued an update to the Interim Guidance for In-person Instruction. The updated guidance was released this weekend and outlines parameters for allowing 3 feet social distancing in schools (pay extra close attention to pages 7-8).  In addition, today NYS DOH issued updated guidance on graduations and other end of year celebrations.  The guidance covers various options for celebrations and limits on gatherings.

A virtual meeting of the New York State Board of Regents was held today, April 12th, 2021. We will post the recording of this meeting on our Authorizer Update page as soon as it becomes available. Full Board Meeting  

The Board opened today’s meeting recognizing Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarship honorees. Following this, the Board discussed an Initiative to Advance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Schools, the draft of which can be found here.

The Board also approved the Consent Agenda, found below, and took a few other actions.

P-12 Education Committee Meeting

During the P-12 Committee meeting, the Regents addressed the following topics:

Proposed Amendment to Section 155.17 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education Relating to District-wide School Safety Plans – The Board unanimously approved regulatory amendments to Section 155.17 of the Commissioner’s regulations to include the amendments made by Chapter 30 of the Laws of 2021 to section 2801-a of the Education Law requiring district-wide safety plans to include protocols for operations for responding to a declared public health emergency involving a communicable disease. Proposed Amendment to Section 135.4 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education Relating to High School Students’ Eligibility to Participate in Interscholastic Competition Until the Conclusion of the Interscholastic Athletic Spring Season – The Board unanimously approved revisions to the proposed amendment relating to eligibility for interscholastic athletics. Renewal Recommendations for Charter Schools Authorized by the Board of Regents

The Board approved the following full-term, five-year renewals and revisions:

  • Global Concepts Charter School (full-term, five-year renewal).
  • Niagara Charter School (full-term, five-year renewal and revisions to amend a Key Design Element of the school’s calendar from 190 instructional days to 180 instructional days to align to the calendar of the district of residence of the majority of enrolled students; to amend the school’s mission to ensure alignment to the school’s key design elements of Expeditionary Learning (EL) Education and the Leader in Me practices; and to amend the school’s vision statement to ensure alignment to the school’s key design elements of EL Education and the Leader in Me practices).

The Board approved the following short-term renewals:

  • Compass Charter School (short-term three-year renewal).
  • Growing Up Green Charter School II (short-term four-year renewal).
  • Harriet Tubman Charter School (short-term three-year renewal).

Renewal Recommendations for Charter Schools Authorized by the New York City Department of Education Chancellor

The Board approved the following renewals and revisions:

  • Brooklyn Scholars Charter School (short-term, four-year renewal).
  • John V. Lindsay Wildcat Academy Charter School (full-term, five-year renewal and a revision to reduce the authorized enrollment from the currently approved 525 students to 425 students beginning in the 2021-2022 school year).

Charter Schools: Renewals to Charters Authorized by the Trustees of the State University of New York 

Department staff presented the following State University of New York Trustees recommendations for early charter renewals for the Board’s approval:

  • Icahn Charter School 2 (Four-year renewal term from 2022 to 2026).
  • Icahn Charter School 3 (Three-year renewal term from 2023 to 2026).
  • Icahn Charter School 4 (Two-year renewal term from 2024 to 2026).
  • Icahn Charter School 6 (Four-year renewal term from 2022 to 2026).
  • Icahn Charter School 7 (Three-year renewal term from 2023 to 2026).
  • Success Academy Charter School – Bronx 3 (Five-year renewal term from 2023 to 2028).
  • Success Academy Charter School – Harlem 6 (Five-year renewal term from 2022 to 2027).

After a brief discussion, the Board unanimously voted in favor of sending the early renewal recommendations back to SUNY for revisions. To read the full resolution, click here.
