I am writing to share some recent developments related to COVID-19. Additionally, our team has created a COVID-19 Updates webpage, which we will continue to keep updated for your reference.

Updates as of today:

  • Closures: Governor Cuomo announced today that there are no plans to force the closure of schools statewide. However, districts and charter schools have been making closure decisions individually. We understand that closing a school impacts the students, their families and communities. Our recommendation is that you align with your home district and continue to work with both the district and the county health department on closure decision-making.

  • Seat Time Requirements: Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today that New York State’s requirement that students receive 180 days of instruction will be waived to accommodate school closures in response to Coronavirus. While this requirement does not apply to charter schools directly, we are flagging it as it may impact districts’ decisions on closure.

  • Meals for students: In the event that a school has been closed due to COVID-19, School Food Authorities (SFA) and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) sponsors can opt in to offer meals through the SFSP or Seamless Summer Option (SSO), subject to waiver application approval by Child Nutrition.  More information can be found here.

  • Admissions and Lotteries: Authorizers are asking that schools wishing to move the date of their lottery reach out to their authorizers immediately.

In addition to the above, we encourage you to continue consulting the following two resources:

We are working to get additional information about the other impacts of closure for our schools. Because we realize this is a fluid situation, we ask that you keep us updated about your school’s status, and reach out when you have important questions.
