Today, Governor Cuomo announced that summer school will not open for in-person instruction this year and that all summer instruction will continue remotely. The Governor has not yet made a decision regarding the upcoming fall semester.  However, he stated that schools will be required to submit their fall re-opening plans in July and that guidance for developing those plans will be released in early June.

Additionally, in case you missed it, the official 20-21 Charter School Basic Tuition and Supplemental Basic Tuition Rates were released today by the New York State Education Department.  In April, I shared our projections for tuition rates with you based on the new language in the enacted state budget. We are working to make the minor changes – in most cases only $1 – to our tuition calculator to reflect the final official rates.  In the meantime, you can access the official 2020-2021 tuition rates by clicking here.

As you know, the state budget revisions that were due to be released on May 15th are now expected to be out at the end of the month.  Expected budget cuts would impact school funding beyond what is shown in the tuition rates. Right now, schools throughout New York State are slated to lose an estimated 20% of education funding due to budget cuts resulting from the COVID-19 crisis. Please join us in advocating for funding for all of New York’s schools – urge New York’s Congressional representatives to support a package that provides the necessary funds to stabilize state budgets by clicking here.

During our weekly Tuesday webinar, we will discuss the implications of the above announcements.

As a reminder, today at 4 pm, we will be hosting a discussion to share an overview of the Board of Regents. Ultimately, all charter actions appear before the Regents before being approved; we encourage all schools to attend – regardless of their authorizer or location.
